Free! Music! Contest 2013 - Viva la FreevoluCCión
Using the slogan »Viva la FreevoluCCión« the fifth Free! Music! Contest has just started. The contest, organized by Musikpiraten e.V., is fairly well-known in the Creative Commons music scene - bands from all over the world already participated. As in 2012, this year all creative commons licenses are allowed.
»All over the world more and more authors publish their work using a Creative Commons license.« explains Christian Hufgard, 1. Chairman of Musikpiraten e.V., the idea behind the slogan. »Especially in Germany, authors have a huge problem: The GEMA. While publishing a song anonymously or using a pseudonym online is not any problem, using these songs is impossible. As long as the user can not give GEMA the real name of the authors, this collecting society claims money for the usage. This must be changed, thus we are calling out for a FreevoluCCión.« The slogan is a combination of the rallying cry »Viva la Revolución«, »Free« as in »Free! Music! Contest« and »CC«, the abbreviation of Creative Commons.
Patron of this year's contest is Victor Love, lead singer of the Italian cyperpunk band Dope Stars Inc.. In 2011, DSI separated from their label and released their album »Ultrawired« as a free download via The Pirate Bay. They had been the first band that had ever been featured with a »Doodle« on the bit torrent search engine's landing page. Since that release they have been playing worldwide on various festivals.
Every band and every solo artist can submit exactly one song, which has been published under the Creative Commons license. An artist who takes part in several projects can submit one song for every project.
Bonus points can be earned by uploading at least one audio track of the song at ccmixter.org. Uploading, and every remix created gives the original artist a bonus point, two bonus points are scored for every submitted music video.
There will be an additional bonus point for remixes of Dope Stars Inc.'s Song »Lies Irae«. Therefore a 206 MB large Remix-Kit is ready for download..
Registration is possible until July 31st, 2013.
As in the last years, a double-CD packed to the brim with the best songs of the contest is going to be produced. A jury chooses the best tracks and takes care that the best of every genre is featured - from Trash Metal to Hip Hop and Blues, whatever the artists submit.
Moreover, vouchers worth 100€ will be raffled among all participants - even the willingness to make one's music free shall be rewarded!
Last but not least, there will be a gig near Heidelberg to win. Due to travelling costs, this one is very likely to go to a band from Germany.
Sponsors are always welcome. Whether the prize is donated or the contest is supported financially, the music pirates are open to any kind of sponsorship. The club is especially looking forward to CD sponsors. Those buy 100 CDs for 250€ and distribute them however they think it best. Sponsors are asked to get in touch via the contact form until August 31st.
Creative Commons, Jamendo and ccMixter already promised their support.
